Into the Darkness

Dean Allan, landscape photographer based in Scotland, UK.
The 1st Waterfall of a New Tide on Isle of Harris.

I have always been drawn to darker photographs.

Not necessarily photographs that are underexposed or deliberately gloomy, but images where some things are left unexplained. Where you have to spend a little time looking before everything begins to reveal itself.

This is one of those photographs.

I remember being drawn to the conditions as much as the landscape itself. There was a heaviness in the air and a softness to the distant mountains that seemed to strip the landscape of detail. Nothing felt particularly dramatic, and yet there was atmosphere everywhere.

It was one of those occasions when the weather didn’t get in the way of the photograph – it became part of it.

And I think that’s a large part of why I like this image so much.

There is a wonderful sense of mystery about it. The mountains don’t demand attention. The sea doesn’t need to be spectacular. Even the foreground rocks seem to disappear into shadow.

Everything feels restrained.

And then there is the light.

That small area of luminous water amongst the dark rocks brings the photograph to life. It draws me in without overwhelming everything around it. Against all those deep, subdued tones, that little patch of brightness feels even more important.

There is just enough light amongst all that darkness.

Perhaps that’s what I respond to most.

There is a mood here that I find difficult to describe. A sense of isolation perhaps, but not loneliness. It feels quiet, slightly mysterious and wonderfully still.

And increasingly, those are qualities I value in my photography.

I don’t always want a photograph to explain everything immediately. Sometimes I want to leave something unanswered. To leave a little space for the imagination and allow the viewer to spend time discovering it for themselves.

I really like this photograph.
