I have recently returned from an enjoyable week in Harris and Lewis with Dean. There was always a clear plan for our days but when there was bad weather Dean's knowledge of the Islands meant we could adapt and make the most of the conditions and carry on shooting. I feel we saw the best of both Islands for photography with Dean on hand for advice when needed. Our accommodation was in a stunning spot with Sally providing delicious food all week. I hope to be on another workshop soon.

Just spent the most wonderful week on a Harris & Lewis photography workshop with Dean and I've no doubt all participants have come away with some amazing photographs. Dean kept constant check on the weather conditions, tide times etc to ensure we experienced every location (iconic ones as well as hidden gems) at their photographic best. All participants received help and guidance out in the field and Dean also gave some editing sessions in the evening. Staying in cottages rather than a hotel was cosy and comfortable and Sally's home cooked meals every evening were delicious, not forgetting the excellent choices on the breakfast and packed lunch menus. We certainly did not go hungry! Based on my experience on Harris & Lewis, I've absolutely no hesitation in recommending a Dean Allan photography workshop. I'll definitely be booking another one.

A great workshop on Harris! I have no hesitation in giving the Harris workshop with Dean 5 stars. I was attracted to book by the quality and style of Dean’s images I had seen online, but of course that ingredient is only a small part of what makes a good workshop. Dean was down to earth, generous with his knowledge, supportive with image taking when needed and at arm’s length when not, flexible to the weather and the whims of the group, and above all good company. Sally’s catering was fabulous - plentiful, wholesome and tasty, all served up with a smile and generosity. Both Sally and Dean cared about the group‘s experience. The accommodation was comfortable, its location on the west coast of Harris is a premium location. All in all a great experience.

Having just returned from attending Dean’s Harris and Lewis workshop and looking through my images, I realise what a varied programme we had in terms of weather, locations and excellent accommodation & catering. Thank you for making this trip so enjoyable and for driving around to take in so many highlights - the Butt of Lewis, the arch near Shawbost and the beautiful beaches on the western coast of Harris. Our accommodation was so comfortable and Sally’s catering delicious- lovely to come back to a bit of home cooking. I liked the idea of having a ‘free’ day as the last day which meant we could individually choose a favourite location and be taken there. This is an excellently organised trip and I recommend it wholeheartedly for the intrepid photographer prepared to take on the weather and stunning landscape.

Locations & Subjects you can Photograph

Luskentyre Beach

We will be based in Tarbert with easy access to the wonderful beaches of Harris which includes the jewel in the crown, Luskentyre. Harris has remarkable coastal treasures from the vast golden sands of Luskentyre and Seilebost that will leave you feeling dwarfed to the immaculate miniature beaches of South Harris, such as the one at Bagh Steinigidh.

There are so many beaches and all of them have their own characters, each offering something different. This is a seascape photographer’s paradise.

Stunning Seascapes

There is a raw but natural beauty to this part of the world that gets through to you in a very different way. You’ll be opening your eyes to the most extraordinary remote corner of the British Isles.

Based in our lovely hotel also gives us easy access to the Golden Road which snakes it’s way around fjord-like inlets and where we’ll find many abandoned crofts amongst the lunar landscape, some locations of which were used in the film Space Odyssey 2001.

Great Scenery

The workshop is designed to provide a balance of visiting a variety of locations which will include seeing the wonderful cliffs and sea stacks along the west coast of Lewis. We will see the impressive Callanish Stones, the amazing stone circles which will challenge your compositional skills as well as the abandoned crofts, moorland, lochans that are dotted around Lewis.

The Garry Sands with their enigmatic rock stacks rising from the sand and the Traigh Mhor one of the longest on Lewis.

Lighthouses

While on Lewis we will visit the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. “The Butt” is characterised by pounding seas and rugged cliffs that extend southeast to North Tolsta where they suddenly give way to two of the islands most beautiful beaches.

Coastal Villages

We will also visit the Gearrannan Blackhouse village, located in a gorgeous bay looking over the ocean and coastal landscapes. From the blackhouses you can wander up the hill and capture an image over the thatched roofs and chimneys. These experiences all offer a peek at what island life used to look like.

Dramatic Weather

Expect to experience fast moving weather systems, which at times can be challenging and a real test of your technical abilities. The light will change throughout the day and you will learn to get the best out of it – this will help you not only be more productive, it can also foster creativity and make it easier to be more flexible when unexpected conditions happen in the future.

I run a very relaxed workshop, which I hope will leave you feeling fulfilled and rewarded. Most of all though, that you come away with new photography skills and great photos of Harris and Lewis.
