Join me for a fabulous journey which will take you to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the British Isles. The Small Isles lies to the west of the Scottish Mainland and includes the islands of Muck, Canna, Eigg, Rum and Sanday.
Join me on an unforgettable journey as we explore the enchanting islands of Canna, Eigg, Rum, Sanday, and Coll aboard a privately chartered boat. Each location, except for Eigg, offers the unique opportunity to step onto remote sandy and rocky shores, where you will find yourself in truly remote and undisturbed havens, filled with endless photographic inspiration.
On Muck and Coll, we will traverse magnificent dunes, reaching breathtaking viewpoints that invite awe.
The remaining days will be devoted to capturing the diverse landscapes of Muck, showcasing stunning vistas that stretch towards Rum, Eigg, and the horizon beyond.
Day 1 – The Adventure Begins
We’ll start our journey in the charming port of Mallaig, where excitement builds as we board the ferry to the enchanting island of Muck. Set against the wild beauty of the Scottish coast, this approximately 2-hour 20-minute voyage promises stunning sea views and a sense of anticipation.
Upon arrival, we’ll settle into the cozy comfort of Gallanach Lodge, your base for this unforgettable trip. As the day unfolds, we’ll venture around the island of Muck including Gallanach Bay — a hidden gem where pristine coral sands meet rugged rocky terraces.
This is just the beginning — an adventure that promises inspiring landscapes, wild wildlife, and the thrill of discovering one of Scotland’s most captivating islands
Day 2: Discovering the Wild Heart of Rum
Today, we will take a private charter on the MV Lochan and delve into the captivating landscapes of the Isle of Rum, a place where dramatic contrasts come alive. From towering sandstone cliffs that plunge into the sea to hidden, tranquil beaches, Rum offers endless opportunities to observe wildlife in its most natural state — a true haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Rum holds a special place in conservation history as the birthplace of the white-tailed eagle re-introduction programme. This island has played a vital role in dispersing these majestic raptors across the Hebrides, symbolising hope and resilience in the face of change.
Our adventure begins as we land by dinghy in a bay surrounded by rugged mountains and the sea, once home to seven families before the Highland Clearances. From here, we’ll embark on a walk, exploring the enchanting sea caves, ancient ruins, and the marram dunes that shimmer above the beach — each step revealing stories etched in geology and history.
Our journey concludes at Bagh Rubha a Mhoil Ruaidh, a striking bay carved out of Torridonian Sandstone, sculpted by the wild forces of Atlantic storms. This rugged, windswept landscape captures the raw power of nature and offers a dramatic backdrop for inspiring photographs and unforgettable moments.
Prepare to be moved by Rum’s wild beauty, resilient history, and profound sense of freedom — a true sanctuary where nature’s spirit reigns supreme
Day 3: Discover the Isle of Eigg
Today, our adventure continues as we set sail aboard our privately chartered boat, crossing the short but spectacular journey to the captivating Isle of Eigg. As we arrive at the pier, you’ll feel the thrill of stepping onto one of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
From the moment we transfer to the Bay of Laig on the island’s eastern coast, you’ll be embraced by breathtaking scenery at every turn. Imagine a pristine coral sand beach gently kissed by the ebbing tide, with the imposing Rum Cuillin towering in the background — a dramatic mountain range rising vertically from the sea to over 800 metres.
As you explore the rocky shoreline, endless photographic opportunities await — from the striking cannonball concretions, perfectly round spheres etched into the sandstone, to panoramas that showcase nature’s raw power and beauty. Here, every shot has the potential to become a masterpiece, capturing the wild spirit and rugged beauty of Eigg.
Prepare to be inspired, motivated, and moved by the timeless beauty of this extraordinary island
Day 4: Exploring the Ancient and Alive
After a hearty breakfast at our base on the Isle of Muck, we’ll venture to Camus Mor, where the rugged beauty tells a story millions of years in the making. Standing amidst the layers of Valtos Sandstone, you’ll feel connected to the Earth’s powerful geological forces that have created this extraordinary landscape.
Following lunch, an easy yet rewarding climb will take us to the summit of Ben Airman. From this vantage point, the entire island unfolds before you — sweeping coastlines, rocky terraces, and hidden coves — a perfect scene for captivating photographs and a moment of quiet reflection amidst raw natural beauty.
Keep your eyes peeled in the waters around Gallanach Bay, famous as a playground for porpoises where playful splashes may surprise you and add an extra touch of magic to your day.
Eilean nan Each, along with the island’s vibrant array of over 80 nesting bird species, offers a symphony of life. During the breeding season, you’ll also have the rare opportunity to spot majestic hen harriers, short-eared owls, and golden eagles soaring gracefully overhead — symbols of freedom, strength, and the enduring wild spirit of these islands.
Prepare to be inspired by the awe-inspiring history, teeming wildlife, and breathtaking vistas that make this day a truly unforgettable part of your journey.
Day 5: Isle of Canna and Isle of Sanday: A Day of Wild Beauty
Today, our journey takes us, by private ferry charter to the dramatic north cliffs of Canna, soaring 150 metres above the wild Atlantic. These rugged cliffs are a haven for thousands of breeding seabirds — including vibrant puffins, kittiwakes, and, on rare occasions, a majestic white-tailed eagle gliding overhead. The sight of these teeming seabird colonies, set against the rugged landscape, promises unforgettable photographic moments filled with life, colour, and raw nature.
After lunch, our adventure continues to the secluded Isle of Sanday. Here, bordered by sea cliffs, we’ll carefully approach via dinghy to capture breathtaking views of the basalt stack of Dun Mor. From these vantage points, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to photograph the large colony of puffins that nest here from April to July, their charming faces a symbol of the wild Atlantic ecosystem.
Prepare to be inspired by the raw power of nature, the vibrant wildlife, and the spectacular scenery that makes these islands a true wilderness sanctuary.
This is a day to ignite your passion for adventure and photography, capturing moments that will stay with you forever
Day 6: Embracing the Mysteries of Muck
Today, we immerse ourselves deeper into the enchanting island of Muck, where the sky and sea constantly shift, creating a dynamic tapestry of colour, light, and movement. As the weather and tides dance in harmony, you’ll witness the ever-changing moods of this rugged paradise — a perfect setting for inspiring photography and reflective moments.
Our journey takes us to Glen Martin, where lush landscapes meet dramatic coastlines, and then onward to the island’s most westerly point in a circular walk that promises breathtaking vistas at every turn. Feel the wild Atlantic breeze, listen to the rhythmic crashing of waves, and let nature’s raw beauty ignite your sense of adventure.
Today is about celebrating nature’s artistry, embracing the island’s captivating spirit, and discovering that sometimes, the greatest treasures are found in the simple, yet unexpected, gifts of the sea
Day 7: Voyage of Discovery on the Isle of Coll
Today, we set sail aboard our privately chartered boat to explore the breathtaking Isle of Coll, a sanctuary of diverse habitats and wild beauty. From whispering coral sand beaches to sweeping dunes and lush grasslands, Coll is a land where nature’s artistry flourishes. It is also a vital stronghold for the elusive and rare corncrake, adding an element of intrigue and discovery to our journey.
Our adventure begins as we arrive by dinghy on the northern shores, where pristine coral sands are backed by vibrant marram dunes swaying in the Atlantic breeze. From a high vantage point, you’ll be treated to panoramic views across an archipelago of islands, with the majestic silhouette of Eigg beyond — a scene that will stay with you long after.
After lunch on land, we’ll return to the boat and set course for Eilean Mòr, the largest island in the archipelago. Here, crystal-clear waters harbour vibrant kelp forests and shimmering shell beaches, while playful seals bask on the rocks.
This is a truly extraordinary time of year — the waters around Coll teem with marine life, offering your best chance to encounter the gentle giants of the ocean: the basking sharks. These magnificent creatures, glide peacefully through the warm offshore waters. And keep an eye out for Minke whales, adding to the awe-inspiring encounters that make this journey unforgettable.
Today is a celebration of wild ecosystems, towering landscapes, and the profound beauty of the sea — a rare chance to connect deeply with nature’s awe-inspiring wonders
Day 8: Farewell to Muck with Last Moments of Wonder

All camera and lens brands ultimately serve the same purpose: capturing what’s in front of them using different types of sensors. What truly makes the difference is the person behind the camera. To get the most out of this trip, it’s crucial that you’re familiar with your own camera—its layout, menus, and capabilities. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials available to help you learn, and it’s essential that you understand your camera’s features and how to control them effectively.
Lens selection is a personal preference. Many landscape photographers opt for zoom lenses such as a 16–35mm, 24–70mm, and 70–200mm. Zooms are a practical choice because they reduce the need to carry multiple prime lenses—particularly useful when not travelling by car to the destination.
Filters are indispensable for many landscape photographers. As a Kase Filters Ambassador, I carry a Polariser, a 3 stop ND, a 6 stop ND and a 10 stop ND filter. All of my filters are circular and magnetic. I will bring some demonstration kits with me, which you are welcome to use. If you are interested in purchasing any Kase Filters, prior, during or after the trip, I will be able to provide a discount code to use on the Kase Website.
Camera bags come in a number of different shapes and sizes. It is important that your bag is comfortable on your back, holds the necessary amount of equipment for your trip and is of the correct size for those travelling by air. I personally use the Shimoda bags which I find to be the most comfortable when carrying my bag on long hikes.
A strong sturdy tripod is hugely beneficial when photographing in the Scottish Highlands. The weather conditions, particularly strong winds make the addition of tripod spikes essential. More often than not, we will be photographing on soft ground or sand in windy conditions. Although the emphasis tends to be on lightweight models you must make sure they reach “eye level” and are able to resist the strong winds. Carbon Fibre makes are more lightweight than aluminium and do the same job. I personally use the Kingjoy C86 tripod, which if you are interested in purchasing, I have a discount code for the Kingjoy range of tripods.
I would recommend that you bring a lap top (where possible) together with a external hard drive so that you can back up your images during the trip.
Wet weather is always a possibility and although the modern day cameras are better at coping with moisture, it is always advisable to take precautions during inclement weather. Either consider a specific rain cover for your camera equipment or at the very least bring a selection of shower caps to protect your camera during passing rain showers. These are easily purchased on Amazon.
Please also bring along lens cloths, a blower, spare batteries and spare SD cards.
Below is a suggested list of Recommended Clothing to consider bringing along:
1. Outerwear
Waterproof Jacket (with a hood): Breathable and fully waterproof (e.g., Gore-Tex or similar). Essential for rain and wind protection.
Waterproof Trousers: Lightweight and packable over-trousers to keep you dry during hikes or sudden downpours.
Insulated Jacket or Fleece Layer: For warmth—consider a down or synthetic insulated jacket that packs down easily.
2. Base Layers
Moisture-Wicking Base Layer (top and bottom): Merino wool or synthetic—keeps sweat away and retains warmth even when damp.
Thermal Leggings (for colder months): Can be layered under trousers for added warmth.
3. Mid Layers
Fleece or Softshell Jacket: Versatile for layering and warmth.
Lightweight Windproof Layer (optional): Useful on blustery summits if your main jacket is too heavy for mild wind.
4. Trousers
Quick-Drying Hiking Trousers: Avoid jeans; go for synthetic or softshell hiking pants that move well and dry fast.
5. Footwear
Waterproof Hiking Boots (with good ankle support): Essential for rugged terrain, boggy areas, and wet conditions.
Wool or Synthetic Hiking Socks: Bring multiple pairs; wool blends help prevent blisters and keep feet warm when wet.
Gaiters (optional): Useful for keeping mud, water, and debris out of your boots.
6. Accessories
Hat/Beanie: To retain heat in colder or windy conditions.
Gloves: Waterproof and warm gloves with decent dexterity for handling your camera.
Neck Gaiter or Buff: Versatile for warmth, wind protection, or even sun shielding.
Cap or Sunhat (summer): Protection from the sun on clearer days.
Sunglasses: Glare off water or snow can be intense, especially in spring/summer.
7. Other Tips
Layering is key: Weather changes quickly; being able to add/remove layers will keep you comfortable.
Pack spares: Always carry an extra pair of socks and base layers in case you get soaked.
- Head Torch
- Re-Usable Water Bottle

Ferry Crossings, Travel Insurance, Cancellation Insurance & Alcoholic Drinks
As this Photography Trip involves Ferry Crossings, Maritime Law requires all passengers have tickets for the specified journey.
Therefore, you must purchase a ticket from Calmac Ferries.
You may do so as a foot passenger and still come across in my vehicle if we are travelling on the same ferry. I recommend you purchase the ticket in advance of the journey so that in the event of a ferry cancellation, you will be able to pursue a claim for any additional costs you may incur as a result (eg a hotel room).
Please read your maritime passenger rights here: GOV.UK
Insurance
All participants are required to take out cancellation insurance AND travel insurance. There is a big difference between these two insurances and what they cover.
Travel insurance: this insurance intends to cover medical expenses, financial default of travel suppliers, and other losses incurred while travelling, either within one’s own country, or internationally. Temporary travel insurance can be arranged at any time before departure on your trip, to cover exactly the duration of that trip, or a “multi-trip” policy can cover an unlimited number of trips within a set time frame. Please check which amount your insurance covers when it comes to damage or theft of you camera equipment / laptop. In case it is not enough, we recommend taking out additional insurance to cover your valuables.
Cancellation insurance: this insurance covers the damage you suffer by circumstances beyond your control, resulting in you having to cancel the trip beforehand or having to break if off before it ended. The circumstances for cancelling a trip are never good. Having cancellation insurance at least avoids you having a financial loss on top of this.
