My Life Photographing the Highlands

Dean Allan, landscape photographer based in Scotland, UK.

Why I Choose to Photograph—and Teach—In the Scottish Highlands

As a professional landscape photographer based in the Scottish Highlands, I’m often asked a simple question: why here?

Why do I choose to specialise in one region, when so many photographers choose to offer workshops across continents, chasing iconic locations from Iceland to Patagonia—following a path shaped by dramatic landscapes and world-famous viewpoints. It’s an exciting approach, built on variety and constant movement, where each new destination offers something visually striking. But it’s also a way of working that often means only scratching the surface of a place, rather than truly understanding it.

The answer is both practical and deeply personal. And, I believe, it’s the very reason I’m able to offer something truly valuable to the photographers who join me.

Depth Over Breadth

The Scottish Highlands are not just a place I work—they are home. Over the years, I’ve come to know this landscape in a way that goes far beyond surface-level familiarity. I understand its rhythms, its moods, and its unpredictability.

This depth of knowledge allows me to deliver something that simply can’t be replicated in a “tick-list” workshop model

I don’t arrive here with a plan pulled from a guidebook. I don’t rely on guesswork or hope for good conditions.

I live here.

I’ve spent years exploring these landscapes in every season, in every kind of weather. I know how this place behaves. I know how quickly it can change, and more importantly—I know how to respond when it does.

That matters.

I don’t arrive here with a plan pulled from a guidebook. I don’t rely on guesswork or hope for good conditions.

I live here.

Because when you join one of my workshops, you’re not just visiting the Highlands—you’re experiencing them through the eyes of someone who understands them deeply.

Why Not Go Global?

It’s a fair question. I’ve travelled, explored other countries, and photographed landscapes far beyond Scotland.

And yes—there’s an undeniable appeal to running international workshops. The idea of offering a diverse range of locations, of constantly seeking new environments, is exciting.

If I were 10 or 20 years younger, I suspect that’s exactly the path I would have taken.

But over time, I’ve come to realise something important: I wouldn’t be able to offer the same level of value elsewhere.

In a new location, I would be learning alongside my clients—figuring out light, access, and conditions in real time. While that can be part of the adventure, it doesn’t align with the standard I want to provide.

My goal is not just to guide people through beautiful landscapes—it’s to give them the best possible chance of creating meaningful, high-quality images.

And I can do that most effectively here, in the Highlands.

Flexibility That Makes a Difference

When you’re running a workshop in a location you know intimately, flexibility becomes one of your greatest strengths.

I know how long it takes to travel between locations—not just in theory, but in reality. I know which roads flood after heavy rain, where snow lingers longest, and which viewpoints are worth the effort in certain conditions.

I understand the tides along the coastlines, and how they shape photographic opportunities. I know when a beach will be at its most photogenic, or when access might be limited.

This allows me to make informed decisions on the fly. If conditions change—and in Scotland, they often do—I can pivot quickly, ensuring that my clients are always in the best possible position to succeed.

That level of responsiveness is incredibly difficult to achieve when operating in unfamiliar or distant locations.

Knowing the Hidden Opportunities

Another advantage of specialising in the Highlands is access to locations that aren’t widely known.

Of course, we visit iconic areas—places that have drawn photographers for decades. But some of the most rewarding experiences come from lesser-known spots. Locations that don’t appear in guidebooks, but offer incredible photographic potential under the right conditions.

These are places I’ve discovered over years of exploration—often through trial, error, and persistence.

Sharing these locations with clients adds a layer of exclusivity and authenticity to the experience. It’s not just about photographing famous scenes—it’s about discovering new ones.

Driven by Passion—Shared with You

Ultimately, though, all of these reasons come back to something deeper: passion.

The Scottish Highlands are a place that continues to inspire me, no matter how many times I return to the same locations. There is always something new to discover—a different light, a different mood, a different interpretation.

That passion is something I bring into every workshop.

It shapes the way I teach, the way I guide, and the way I share this landscape with others. I don’t see these workshops as just a service—they’re an opportunity to connect people with a place that means a great deal to me.

And I believe that authenticity makes a difference.

Offering the Best Possible Experience

By focusing on one region, I’ve been able to refine and improve what I offer year after year.

Every workshop builds on the last. I learn from each experience, make adjustments, and continue to evolve the product.

This isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing better.

I’m comfortable in the belief that what I offer in the Scottish Highlands represents the best of what I can provide as both a photographer and a workshop leader.

And that’s important to me.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, my goal is simple: to continue offering and improving these workshops for many years to come.

There will always be new places to explore, new ideas to consider—but my focus will remain here, in the Highlands.

Because this is where I can offer the greatest value.

This is where I feel most at home.

And this is where I can give my clients an experience that is not only informative and rewarding—but truly memorable.

A Workshop You Can Trust

By focusing entirely on the Scottish Highlands, I’ve been able to refine these workshops into something I’m genuinely proud of.

Each one builds on years of experience.

Each one is designed with intention.

And each one is delivered with the same goal: to give you the best possible photographic experience.

I’m confident in what I offer.

And I’m committed to continuing to improve it—year after year.
