The Amazing Outer Hebrides
Join me on my Harris and Lewis photography workshops and take a journey around some of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes and islands.
Scotland’s western Isles and Outer Hebrides offer an amazing diversity of scenery and creative licence for the photographer. Ranging from the white sandy beaches, turquoise seas, rugged cliffs and sea stacks to the windswept plateaus and the spectacular scenery along the Golden Road.
Excellent rating
Based on 2 reviews Had a pleasure to take 2 wonderful photo tours in Assynt. Dean is very professional photographer who went above and beyond to accommodate my requests. Definitely recommend Dean to anyone who is interested in photography tours. Igor Sorokin31/08/2025 I recently did a 1-2-1 tuition day with Dean along the Moray coast and it was an absolutely brilliant experience. Dean is not only a talented photographer but also a fantastic teacher—patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I learnt so much in just one day, from camera techniques to composition, and came away feeling far more confident in my photography. The locations he chose were stunning, and his passion for both the area and photography really shines through. I can’t recommend Dean highly enough to anyone wanting to improve their skills while enjoying a great day out! Jennifer Findlay17/08/2025
Locations & Subjects you can Photograph
Luskentyre Beach
We will be based in Tarbert with easy access to the wonderful beaches of Harris which includes the jewel in the crown, Luskentyre. Harris has remarkable coastal treasures from the vast golden sands of Luskentyre and Seilebost that will leave you feeling dwarfed to the immaculate miniature beaches of South Harris, such as the one at Bagh Steinigidh.
There are so many beaches and all of them have their own characters, each offering something different. This is a seascape photographer’s paradise.
Stunning Seascapes
There is a raw but natural beauty to this part of the world that gets through to you in a very different way. You’ll be opening your eyes to the most extraordinary remote corner of the British Isles.
Based in our lovely hotel also gives us easy access to the Golden Road which snakes it’s way around fjord-like inlets and where we’ll find many abandoned crofts amongst the lunar landscape, some locations of which were used in the film Space Odyssey 2001.
Great Scenery
The workshop is designed to provide a balance of visiting a variety of locations which will include seeing the wonderful cliffs and sea stacks along the west coast of Lewis. We will see the impressive Callanish Stones, the amazing stone circles which will challenge your compositional skills as well as the abandoned crofts, moorland, lochans that are dotted around Lewis.
The Garry Sands with their enigmatic rock stacks rising from the sand and the Traigh Mhor one of the longest on Lewis.
Coastal Villages
We will also visit the Gearrannan Blackhouse village, located in a gorgeous bay looking over the ocean and coastal landscapes. From the blackhouses you can wander up the hill and capture an image over the thatched roofs and chimneys. These experiences all offer a peek at what island life used to look like.
Dramatic Weather
Expect to experience fast moving weather systems, which at times can be challenging and a real test of your technical abilities. The light will change throughout the day and you will learn to get the best out of it – this will help you not only be more productive, it can also foster creativity and make it easier to be more flexible when unexpected conditions happen in the future.
I run a very relaxed workshop, which I hope will leave you feeling fulfilled and rewarded. Most of all though, that you come away with new photography skills and great photos of Harris and Lewis.
