Exploring the Serenity of the Uist Islands..
A Photographer’s Journey…
When one thinks of the stunning landscapes of the Outer Hebrides, names like Harris and Lewis immediately spring to mind. However, nestled in this magnificent archipelago is the often-overlooked gem of the Uist Islands, a place that promises a unique photographic experience far removed from the hustle and bustle of more tourist-frequented locations. With their breathtaking coastlines, friendly locals, and an overwhelming sense of peace, the Uists offer landscape photographers a picturesque haven full of charm and inspiration.
The Enchantment of the Uist Islands…
The Uist Islands—comprising of Berneray, North Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, South Uist and the beautiful Eriskay—boast a charm that is both gentle and profound. Each island has its own character, linked by causeways ,waiting to unfold before the lens of a camera. The feeling of tranquility here is palpable; it’s as if time stands still, allowing photographers to immerse themselves fully in their surroundings. One can’t help but notice the warm greetings exchanged by locals as you drive the nearly deserted single-track roads. This friendly atmosphere fosters a sense of community and connection that adds to the photographic experience.
A short ferry from Eriskay to explore the islands of Barra & Vatersay adds great value to the experience and completes a journey along this quite incredible land.
An Unspoilt Paradise
As a landscape photographer, the Uists present endless opportunities for breathtaking imagery. The pristine coastline curves invitingly, with secluded beaches that seem to stretch infinitely. From the northern beaches of Berneray to the southern shores of Eriskay, the scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Each visit reveals new palates of color and light, offering a different perspective on familiar landscapes. The West Beach competes fiercely with the famed Luskentyre, showcasing white sands and azure waters that will leave you breathless.
One of my personal favorites, Clachan Sands on North Uist, epitomises the beauty of the islands. My photographs taken here often showcase a play of light and shadow that reflects the ever-changing weather—each image telling a story that is unique to that moment. The empty beaches, where the only footprints are your own, create a serene backdrop that inspires creativity and reflection.
An Unspoilt Paradise..
For pure sensory pleasure, a visit to Berneray’s amazing beaches is a must. It is an experience I always look forward to and cherish each time as if it were to be my last. These shores boast seascapes so stunning that they were once mistaken for exotic Thai resorts by Scotland’s own tourism officials! West Beach is the Jewel in the Crown – this three-mile stretch of machair that hugs the magnificent coastline offers a tranquil escape, with its wonderful white sands and turquoise waters. I have spent countless hours wandering through this enchanting landscape, immersing myself in its tranquil embrace. Whether walking its scenic paths or finding a quiet spot to sit and observe, I relish the opportunity to witness the land’s captivating rhythm and to capture its majestic beauty unfolding before me. In 2021, this breathtaking beach was voted the third-best in Lonely Planet’s Top 20 Best Beaches in Europe, with each visit to Berneray unveiling new opportunities for capturing the beauty of untouched landscapes.
A visit to the Berneray Bistro is essential during your travels. It serves as a delightful retreat where you I often pause between locations, unwind, and reflect on my photographic approach. I normally treat myself to the finest local cuisine while savouring a warm cup of hot chocolate, making it the perfect place to recharge and gather my thoughts.
North Uist: A Photographer’s Dream…
North Uist is a true treasure for photographers, offering a diverse landscape that inspires creativity at every turn. With its vast expanses of shimmering lochs, windswept moorlands, and breathtaking beaches, this island has something to captivate every lens.
Photographic opportunities abound here, but the coastline at Clachan Sands undeniably takes the spotlight—and rightly so. Each visit reveals a fresh perspective as the tides, light, and weather choreograph an exquisite performance that even Mozart would have admired. My favourite moments come when the tide has receded completely, unveiling the full expanse of the beach. This allows me to include a hint of the ocean while capturing the majestic Harris Hills in the distance.
If I dare to be greedy, I enjoy the early morning or late evening, when the expansive skies provide a canvas for stunning light that transforms the landscape. Beyond Clachan Sands, North Uist offers a wealth of other remarkable locations that enrich any collection of images. From the serene Vallay Sands and the charming Monty’s House to the panoramic views towards the Monarch Isles, each spot adds its own unique allure. And let’s not overlook a drive along Committee Road, where the chance to observe birds of prey in their natural habitat provides additional inspiration for any nature photographer. North Uist truly encapsulates the spirit of the Outer Hebrides, promising endless opportunities for captivating imagery.
Echoes of History: The Rich Heritage of the Uist Islands..
As I explore and fall deeper in love with the Uist Islands, I am constantly reminded of their historical value, where remnants of past human residents whisper stories of resilience and community. Once, the shores echoed with the laughter of children at play, while families thrived in this rugged, remote landscape. The island’s historical sites, from ancient stone structures to remnants of crofts, reveal the enduring spirit of those who called these islands home. Each stone and path tells a tale of lives led in harmony with the unpredictable elements, showcasing the strength and tenacity of a community that flourished despite the harshness of their surroundings. The Uists stand not only as a breathtaking natural sanctuary but also as a testament to the rich tapestry of human life woven throughout their history.
My Deep-rooted Love for Eriskay..
Among the Uist Islands, Eriskay holds a special place in my heart. If I could live on these islands (if my wife agreed, of course) I would choose Eriskay. This small, humble island is home to a tightly-knit community of some of the friendliest people you could ever meet. I often dream of moving here, captivated by the simplicity and beauty of island life. Eriskay’s charm is woven into its history, the most notable event being the story of “Whisky Galore.” This tale of opportunism during World War II showcases the island’s spirit, and it’s an experience that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.
Moreover, Eriskay possesses significant historical importance as the launch point of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite rebellion on July 23, 1745. Standing on its shores, you can feel the weight of history, adding another layer of depth to your photographs.
The causeway which links South Uist to Eriskay is a wonderful opportunity to take a wonderful photograph which conveys such vastness and such beauty. It can be photographed from either end, each producing strong emotive images. Prince’s Beach where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed is full of wonderful opportunities for imagery. The island of Barra can be included to add a wonderful backdrop to the flat rocks that occupy your foreground. A long exposure enthusiasts dream shot. Then, of course, there is Eriskay Harbour which has to be the most photogenic harbour in the Western Isles. I never tire of photographing it – wonderful.

The Role of Light and Weather…
What makes the Uists truly magical is the unpredictable and ever-changing light. As a photographer, you learn to dance with the weather, capturing moments that are fleeting yet eternally beautiful. The clouds frequently shift over the landscape, providing dramatic skies that enhance the beauty of your subjects. Mornings usually greet you with soft, diffuse light, while afternoon storms can create moodiness that adds character to your images.
In such an environment, every outing is an adventure. You’ll never run out of places to explore or pictures to capture. Even common scenes transform before your eyes—the same beach can appear entirely different depending on the time of day and weather conditions. The tranquillity brought by the natural surroundings aids the creative spirit, allowing photographers to capture the essence of the land in ways few have experienced.
